Deni Carise

Deni Carise is currently Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Phoenix House, a national system of over 100 treatment and prevention programs in 10 states serving approximately 7,000 people on any given day. She was previously employed at the Philadelphia based Treatment Research Institute (TRI) where she had worked 1994 and was Director of the Treatment Systems Research Section from 1998 until July 2010. Her work has focused on developing new interventions as well as time-saving, treatment-improving information management strategies for providers of substance abuse services. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned both her Bachelor’s Degree and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Hahnemann (now Drexel) University, a major medical university in Philadelphia. In the substance abuse treatment and research field over 24 years, Dr. Carise has practiced in various substance abuse treatment programs including; public and private abstinence oriented and methadone maintenance programs, hospital and residential programs, and in numerous types of other outpatient settings. She has worked with adults and adolescent populations including dually diagnosed clients, Native Americans, HIV/AIDS clients, the elderly, and with medical populations (including spinal cord injured, cardiac care and trauma patients). After Internship at Union Memorial and Hopkins hospitals in Behavioral Medicine (1992-1993) and a University of Pennsylvania NIDA Post-Doctoral Fellowship (1993–1996) in addiction research and instrument development, Dr. Carise refocused her efforts from direct clinical care to training and research. All of her work has been focused on improving access, quality and effectiveness of substance abuse treatment in community-based programs both in the US and abroad. She has worked extensively with numerous countries and their treatment providers including Nigeria, Thailand, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Singapore, Brazil, China and others to integrate scientifically-validated treatments into their treatment programs. She has been particularly committed to working with developing countries. Dr. Carise has published in numerous peer-reviewed and professional journals and has presented over 150 lectures by invitation (approximately 35 internationally) in the past 15 years. She has also been featured in segments of Nightline, Fox News, Federally-funded Web-casts, has been quoted in Major newsprint media such as US News and World Report and has a regular Blog on Huffington Post.
